Jackson County Keeps It Real

August 1, 2006 |

Jackson County CourthouseThe race for Jackson County Executive is providing some great political theater over at the Star’s Buzz Blog. The latest is a last-minute endorsement of Charlie Wheeler by Mayor Kay Barnes. It’s no surpise Barnes favors Wheeler, considering the connections to Barnes, consultants Pat Gray and Steve Glorioso, and Wheeler puppet master Katheryn Shields. The news is that Barnes issued the last-minute endorsement after pledging to remain neutral. Looks like the Wheeler campaign is feeling vulnerable.

More interesting is a hoo-ha over Lee’s Summit Mayor Karen Messerli and St. Luke’s Health System CEO Richard Hastings, who employs the mayor in her day job and supposedly pressured her into endorsing Wheeler.

With the corruption of city government largely cleaned up after the City Council members went to jail in the 1990s, it’s nice to see the county continues to keep it real.

I do not see anything wrong with the mayor making an endorsement.
