With 90,000 people, Lee’s Summit just became the largest suburb in the region with a smoking ban in public places. Their City Council passed the new law last night with few exceptions. A November referendum will allow voters to extend the ban to all businesses. Independence could take that title in November when voters decided on an initiative petition. KCMO took the lead last year with a model smoking ordinance that will effect bars and restaurants once the majority of the metro area follows suit. Tiny Fairway was the first suburb to follow their lead.

Yay!
So how close are we now to KCMO’s ordinance going in to effect? Lees Summit, Fairway… We’re getting there.
Lame. So much for the rights of private business owners on their own private property.
Olathe is close to a ban as well.
Scooter, as soon as you open your business to the public you lose a certain amount of the privacy that you might expect as an individual in your private home.
This is great; I hope it eventually moves down to Westport and surrounding areas. It would be nice to come home Saturday morning not smelling like Camel Joe. Is it that big of deal to go outside to smoke, of course bars would be wise to offer some sort of deck/ patio for the smokers.
* reminds me of Kramer inviting everyone to his apartment to smoke.
Mmm… Good post
Will watch your blog
