Near-record bicycle fatalities

Bike fatalities mapLast week pre-school teacher Susan Brewer was hit and killed while cycling to her job in Liberty. A vigil will be held to honor Susan tonight at 7:00 p.m. at Liberty City Park, Hwy 291 and Kent Street.

Susan’s death is the fifth this year, which ties the previous record set in 2002. It’s happening everywhere – from John Triggs in Downtown KC to Kelly Batman in rural Lone Jack, MO. Just this week a father and his 3 year-old daughter were struck outside of Lawrence, KS. This map shows 29 places where cyclists have died since 1991.

It should be noted that Robert Osborn (noted on the map) was not in a vehicular collision, he was shot and killed. Not that that diminishes anything but the map might be more useful for identifying patterns if the type of incident is identified and whether it as the cyclist of the motor vehicle that was at fault.
