Clay Chastain finally gets his trains
Clay finally wins over a majority, and Kansas Citians show they are finally tired leaderless dicking around on transportation issues. A bad plan is better than no plan. Now we’ll see how the powers that be try to weasel out.

Update: Buzz blog notes the fine print of the new City Charter allows the City Council repeal ordinances adopted by initiative petition. In the first year it takes 9 votes, afterwards a simple majority.

McCaskill knocks off Talent
This race proves the urban vote isn’t enough for a Democrat to win in Missouri, but they can be competitive in rural Missouri if they try.>

Kansas moderates put the smack down
Nancy Boyda shocks Jim Ryun, while voters turn out a wingnut in favor of a real law enforcement officer.

Stems Cells squeak by
Science scores a narrow victory over extremism.

Joco votes against the kids
Johnson County votes against the youth soccer fields and kills most chances for a Wizards soccer stadium. The metro’s second largest county proves once again it wants no part in regional projects. Look for Riverside to make a play for the stadium.

    BloghKC, not BlogJoCo.

You just couldn’t resist an unfounded slap at your neighbors. Up yours. JoCo has gotten tired of subsidizing regional projects that for the benefit of Big Mo. Lets not mention that the soccer ikssue had nothing to do with the east side of the state line.

The question rem ains.. Why do you think you know a damn thing about anything?

  2. Ryan on November 8, 2006 8:47 am

Yeah, thanks for building and maintaining the Truman Sports Complex for us, JoCo! And for contributing to the KCATA so we can have a viable regional transportation system! And don’t forget all the JoCo money going towards the building and maintenence of the Sprint Center, Kemper Arena, and Bartle Hall. Thanks so much for all your charity! It’s nice to know that the richest part of the metro funds all these great projects!

    Yeah, right. Up *yours*, douchebag.

  3. lemon on November 8, 2006 10:48 am

Plenty opf JoCo money helps fund and maintain all of those facilities. Have we already forgotten Bi-State I and Bi-State II?

And what does JoCo get out of the deal?

The Soccer initiative was not a regional issue. To make assumptions about JoCo’s support of regional issues is comparing apples to oranges. Why are KCMO peop0le concerned about what happens in JoCo.

Go back tol school, if you can find one that is accredited in KCMO.

    Douchebag? Are you 13?

  4. ChrisM70 on November 8, 2006 12:37 pm

    “Go back tol school”….

    hilarious.

Fuck youi too, Chris! This blog and the majorikty of its respopndants contine to behave like spoiled and jealous school boys not too mention an emb\arassing inferiority complex re JoCo.. How does your comment, Chris, further the discussion?

Let us talk about the regional issues that JoCo has been wrangled into in the past. Union Station is still spilling plenty of red ink.

I’ll make a deal with you, Chris. You grow uip and ignore the minor typos we all make and… and nothing. It is called respect and is one of the base principals behind cogent and productive dialogue. Give no respect. Receive no respect. That means you too, BlogKC.

  6. lemon on November 8, 2006 4:27 pm

Judging by your juv enile attitude, I’m probably safe in assuming that you werre not evenh born when the Truman Sports Complex was nbuilt. You really can’t take responsability for that. The last time I che3cked, Jackson Co residents still first craqck at Chiefs tickets.

As for the Soccer issue. I’m not suprised it didn’t pass but I see no reasln to portray it as manything than a minor setback. How many Clay Chastain ballot initiativews failed before this last one passed. Also keep in mind that it nhasn’t even begun to be adequately funded to be r4ealized and I’ve heard many people in the know that don’t think that funding will ever come to fruition. The JoCo soccer field issue will return again. Hopefully, the supporters will have learned from thier mistakes. Unlike BlogKC, I feel that sometimes no plan *is* better than a flawed plan. OTOH, I guess the monkeys at the kc zoo need access to the airport.

Chris, no need to point out an y typos. Even the monkeys should be able to clearly understand my point. Do you?

“Plenty of JoCo money helps fund and maintain all of those facilities. Have we already forgotten Bi-State I and Bi-State II?”

Apparently you have because no JoCo money is currently helping to fund or maintain any of those aforementioned projects. It’s hilarious they don’t even want to pay for a measly little soccer stadium.

  8. lemon on November 8, 2006 5:01 pm

I wonder why the McCaskill/Talant race proves that urban cores don’t get Democrats elected. By all reports it was the delayed precincts in Kansas City and St. Louis that flipped the early poll numbers towards Claire. But feel free to make up any reaswon that fits your agenda, whatever that may be today.

  9. ChrisM70 on November 8, 2006 5:20 pm

    “majorikty of its respopndants”

classic. Sounds like the ramblings of another guy who used to post on this blog, or perhaps how a typing monkey might try to make himself understood…

As for the soccer vote, I think the problem was 3 things:
    1. Many people couldn’t see why a “measly” soccer stadium should cost $75 million.
    2. There were very little specifics in any of the advertising which made a lot people feel that this was some kind of money grab and that the money would end up being used for other things.
    3. People just don’t really care about soccer.

I don’t really agree, but I think those are the reasons.

Plus, I think it is HILARIOUS that KC voted for Chastain’s plan! It might be a crappy plan with giant holes in it, but at least the voters have finally made it clear: PEOPLE WANT BETTER TRANSPORTATION OPTIONS.

Finally, BlogKC is a BLOG. I don’t know how many times this needs to be said, but the owner of this blog can write about anything he WANTS. I think of KC as a metro area where all areas should be included - or should be of interest to everyone. After all, what happens in one part of town can, and often does, affect the whole area.

Moore, Boyda, Morrison and Sebelius - A great day for Kansas!

  10. lemon on November 8, 2006 5:23 pm

And Ryan…. Kemper Arena is named for R. Crosby Kemper. A Kansan.

As for that measly soccer stadium, build it yourself. What do the Wizards draw? 3,500? The numbers don’t add up. That is why I vopted against the proposal. We may have money in JoCo. There is a reason for that. We don’t fritter it away on a billion dollar boonjdoggle called light rail. Good luck with that.

  11. lemon on November 8, 2006 5:39 pm

And yes, Chris, I misspelled boondoggle, you petty prick.

  12. lemon on November 8, 2006 5:44 pm

    Chris-

Sure BloKC can write whatever they please. That doesn’t necessarilly help the integrity of his message. What are thier credentials as a political pundit? Why are they so afraid of counter opinions? What is the point of this blog? To pontificate without challange? That is chicken-shit.

  13. lemon on November 8, 2006 5:45 pm

I am reminded of an old saying: If you can’t stand the heat get out of the kitchen.

  14. lemon on November 8, 2006 5:55 pm

I heard a report the other day about how one of the inventors of tyhe internet (no, not John Kerry) who expressed his concerns about how the net has become a source of false and misleading information. In essence, he was blaming the biggest part of the blame on bloggers.

  15. lemon on November 8, 2006 5:56 pm

Are you the solution or are you the problem?

  16. lemon on November 8, 2006 6:01 pm

yES… THIS IS A BLOG… YET I CONTINUE TO BE ERASED AND BANNED FROM THE DISCUSSIONS APPARENTLY DUE TO MY COUNTER OPINIONS.

    Frfikkin’ moronic hypocrites.

  17. Mike on November 8, 2006 7:37 pm

This guy is hilarious…earth to lemon, or lemming or whatever name you want to go by - you’re a jagoff! you post ricockulous shyte, and complain the entire time. as people have said before, why don’t you start BlogJoCo?? Then you can put in whatever crap you want, and we can come trash it.

    adios

  18. lemon on November 8, 2006 7:50 pm

Such silliness. There are plenty of JoCo people doing business in KCMO and vice-versa. Why perpetuate a false division?

  19. murph on November 8, 2006 9:50 pm

Yup, Clay’s stripping money from buses to pay for an aerial gondola will solve the “leaderless dicking around on transportation issues.” No mass transit for an unworkable vanity project from an out-of-state crank.

Yup, sound like a better plan.

  20. CWG on November 9, 2006 7:45 am

    Chastain’s Transit Plan

Light rail would be nice, but the financing has to work. This proposal is Science City on wheels — the funding simply will not support the project as designed, and something has to give.

According to section 704 of the city charter approved in 2006, this initiative ordinance can be easily repealed by 9 Council votes this year, and 7 votes after that.

  21. Tim on November 9, 2006 7:48 pm

The longer we wait to embrace light rail, the less likely it will happen due to rising costs. We kind find some way to make this work. I think once it is in place, there will be an explosion of economic activity along its corridor. Just look at what it’s done for cities like Denver, Minneapolis and St. Louis. We have to think to the future and stop being afraid of success.

  22. lemon on November 10, 2006 8:04 am

Didn’t St. Louis just recently abandon plans to expand thier light rail system. All is not so rosey, Tim.

  23. Tim on November 10, 2006 8:15 am

I would say delay rather than abandon. We have to face the fact that the population in every major city is only going to increase. Looking 25 years into the future, we will look back and be happy that we put this in place when we did. I’m also all for the Smart Moves idea, but it is flawed in that it would be dependent on the flow of traffic, which will only get worse with time. Light rail runs like a clock since it bypasses all the congestion. This is the future of commuting, and the time to commit to it is now.

  24. lemon on November 10, 2006 8:18 am

OTOH, I agree that light rail can succeed. It will take time and money as well as proper planning and routing. So if your concern is getting the monkeys from the KC Zoo to the airport, you’ve got the best plan on the table.

The biggest rteason the issue passed has a lot to do with very li8ttle scrutiny of the plan and an inability to be heard above the din created by other issues such as the Senate seat, SCNT or cig taxes.

  25. CWG on November 10, 2006 9:16 am

Finances, darned finances. Something that needs a look is the city’s credit rating relative to the debt it has incurred. Add to that an estimated $1 billion that may soon be on the table to pay for long deferred maintenance and upgrades on the water supply system. That will have to be financed by bonds, and that could push the City’s level of indebtedness into a higher risk range. This could increase the cost of borrowing for *all* city debt, even to the point of triggering rate escalation in existing debt.

So, … the City just can’t embark on this project without firm financing in place. As romantic as the Chastain proposal may be, the financing is just NOT there. Maybe it will be, at which time, full speed ahead.

But don’t be surprised to start hearing more concern voiced about the city’s debt level and credit rating.

  26. Tim on November 10, 2006 1:28 pm

True, but I think it is worth the risk. Putting a progressive face on the city with light rail, a new arena, and a vibrant downtown will help make us more competitive with other cities to bring in $$ from outside the metro. Get the FFA and other lost conventions and events back. We
have to think about the long term here. As the saying goes, no guts, no glory.

  27. Hippstar on November 13, 2006 9:18 pm

If there’s one thing this town needs, it’s a light rail line to the zoo. I’m tired of driving my damn car there every weekend. And the initial price tag is only a BILLION dollars. Seems like a reasonable price so wannabe urban hipsters in Waldo can listen to their iPods on their way to RecordBar and not feel so bad about not living in Chicago.

I think it’s hilarious when people bash JoCo for not signing up for all these taxes when the jackasses in KCMO get all fired up to pay for everything by themselves. I think the partnership works fine: people in JoCo that can actually afford to go to Chiefs games and symphonies and the Big 12 tournament will go to those things and people in JaxCo that like jacking up their own taxes get to feel superior about themselves. It’s a win-win.

  28. Tim on November 18, 2006 6:00 pm

We in Jackson County need all this stuff in place before the JoCo up-to-their-necks-in-personal-debt asses COMPLETELY max out their credit cards. Now can we talk about the McMansions with no furniture?
