Messing with Missouri’s minimum wage increase
November 20, 2006 |
The ink is barely dry on Missouri’s minimum wage initiative and corporations are already trying to weaken it. They are targeting a provision that ties the minimum wage to inflation, so that workers get an annual raise to help them keep up with the cost of inflation. Since this initiative petition was a regular statute and not a constitutional amendment, the General Assembly is able to alter it.
Unfortunately the current General Assembly has a poor track record on respecting the will of the voters, as evidenced by their 2003 legalization of concealed carry after two consecutive rejections by voters.
