More suburbs ban smoking
November 12, 2006 |
Initiative petitions in Tuesday’s election saw two more suburbs join the smoke-free bandwagon. Independence and Lee’s Summit voters passed
comprehensive smoke-free laws by 2/3 margins. A handful of Kansas suburbs have passed similar laws through their city councils - Overland Park, Olathe, Fairway, and Roeland Park.
KCMO’s smoking ban exempts bars and restaurants until 85% of the metro population is covered by a similar ban. By my rough calculation we are now at 900,000 of the 1.5 million needed for KCMO’s trigger. KCMO’s Casinos are exempted until NKC and Riverside pass similar bans in for their casinos. Meanwhile, Jim Rowland is leadning an initiative petition to remove KCMO’s 85% exemption.

And you say that JOCO residents add nothing to the region’s interests. Let us hope the rest of the dominos falol soon.
JoCoites are used to relying on nannies so it’s not surprising they’d push for the Nanny State first.
Good luck with your lung cancer, Scooter.
You can ban everything you want, something is still going to kill you.
BTW I am a nonsmoker. But I hate busybodies telling other people what they can and cannot do on their own private property. People need to mind their own damn business and use a concept called personal responsibility.
It has little to do with “private” property. I own an office building. I cannot smoke inside that building. Most people can find housing, whether it be rented, mortgaged or privately owned, that allows them to smoke at home to their heart’s content. Their are lots of behaviors that we curtail in public places, even bars.
Smoking indoors is gross and stupid.
How dumb are smokers?? It’s 2007. Smoking is bad not cool. The memo is out and 17 states got it. Lawrence got it too.
JoCo got it and it’s sitting in KC’s inbox waiting to be opened.
Smoke cigis out front or on the deck but not inside.
Colorado enacted a smoking ban in all restaraunts and bars this summer, and now all most all of the bars are struggling to survive.
It’s a sad day for all the veterans who fought for their freedoms when the state decides what legal activities you can do in your own property.
