Politician with a sense of humor

December 11, 2006 |

Mayoral candidate Mark Funkhouser was quick to notice the fun that some bloggers were having with his new campaign signs, and actually showed a sense of humor about it. Instead of Ming or Saruman he suggests Abe Lincoln or Spock.

It’s almost enough to forgive the unfortunate “I don’t do much pop culture” remark, which is only slightly less annoying than some folks’ tiresome “I don’t own a television” smugness. Anyway, kudos to a politician with some self-deprecation and a manageable ego.

I didn’t know either of those characters. While I know other parts of pop culture, I was clueless on these.

(That would be clueless on Ming and Saruman, not Lincoln or Spock…)

Sorry if that was harsh. I just had an encounter with one of those people that doesn’t own a television and smugly wears it like a badge of honor. Kindof a pet peeve of mine…

I think Ming the Merciless was the villain in Buck Rogers…kind of looks like Funkhouser…heheheeee

Ming was the bad guy in Flash Gordon; Saruman is the baddie in Lord of the Rings (recently played by Christopher Lee).

Angie, proud to be a geek

So what is one’s response to those who are smug about not owning a TV?

I have to admit I didn’t know who Saruman is either. Never saw Lord of the Rings.

Hey BlogKC, just wanted to say I like the new mast header. But what “is” it? Am I about to be chastised for not recognizing something?

    Mark–that’s the Nelson’s new addition. :^)

Ahh! Thus the “nelsonbloch.jpg” name makes more sense. Thanks Jeff!

I second the very cool nameplate/header!

If I said that I don’t own a TV, but I miss watching “Yes, Dear” in syndication on my former roommate’s TV, what would you say to that? ;>

There is so much good potential for campaign slogans here.

A natural choice, in my opinion:

    “BRING IN THE FUNK!”
