Star rates the neighborhoods

Last year the Star ran a high profile, fawning series rating the quality of life in our suburbs. This year they are rating neighborhoods in the city limits. The series’ intro says that most neighborhoods are doing well in areas like safety, retail, education, etc. despite annual budget cutbacks and dismal results in annual surveys of city services. The conclusion: neighborhoods are doing well but City Hall doesn’t get much credit for it.

Today the focus is on the Southwest Corridor from Downtown to Waldo. No one should be surprised that the Star picked perennial media darling Brookside as the winner in the city’s most prominent sector.  But I was surprised that how much credit for Brookside’s success was given to J.C. Nichols racist and anti-Semitic deed covenants.  Those restrictions were long-ago invalidated, but their legacy of privileged white neighborhoods still remain.

Sarcasm aside, it’s great to see someone, anyone, doing real analysis of conditions on the ground in KC.

I’m glad you posted about this, when I read about this series I was too pissed off to even look at the thing. I have my own take on the subject but it’s good to see that other people in this town also see that The Star has very little idea about KC’s history which is kinda funny but expected since they all live in JoCo.

    Awesome post by the way.

You have a voice. Why not do your own series? I suppose it is easier to criticize.

I get the KC Star because I paid for it 2 years in advance. I haven’t read it for 4-5 months. I quit because I didn’t believe half of the black stuff on the paper. The star writes to sell. I have switched to the internet for my news.
