Enough with the free trash bags

January 28, 2007 |

To whomever took the time to bitch about free trash bags at today’s mayoral forum, get over it. Better yet, get the hell out. Please. Move to one of our beige neighbors. I’ll chip in for your moving van. Our city has many more important issues to deal with the stupid trash bags. I know you feel like you were promised trash bags in exchange for an earnings tax. But some promises are just unreasonable to make, or to expect fulfilled.

I’d like the city to give me free toilet paper, but I’d much rather my tax money be spent on infrastructure, jobs, police, and such. You old-timers have been bitching about the trash bags for longer than I’ve been alive. Enough already.

What is the story about the free trash bags? I have only been here for about 8 years, but I have heard people mention it over the years.

One of the things that the earnings tax pays for is garbage collection. Originally that also included free, city-provided trash bags. At some point the free trash bags were discontinued to save money.

Some of the old folks are still really bitter about it and complain that they were supposed to get free trash bags forever…

yeah, forget about the trash bags. find a way to run the city without an income tax. if we ditched the e-tax, residents and employers might actually consider moving back into the city.

I couldn’t agree more. I first moved into KC nearly 20 years ago and I’d swear people were bitching about the trash bags back then.

Funny thing is, most of the people who gripe now are retirees who aren’t even contributing to the earnings tax anyway.

Also, enough with this myth that the earnings tax drives people out of the city. If that were true, how is that KCMO is building more houses than the next three suburbs combined? How is that the Northland is growing faster than Joco or Lee’s Summit? How is that Downtown’s population has doubled in less than 10 years? The earnings tax doesn’t seem to be stopping these people from moving Downtown or to the Northland…

People left the city because of racial fear, crime, and failing schools. The earnings tax is just a convenient excuse for people that have already decided to leave or who would never seriously consider moving into the city in the first place.

I think the point about the bags should be that politicians make phony promises which they may actually carry out — for a time. I put it to you that the free trash bags provision was a sweetener to make a tax increase palatable. Did anyone at the time say “Don’t do it! It’s a trap!” If so, good on you, mate. And shame on you gullible voters who fell for it. Well, that’s too harsh. But learn the lesson already!!!

why should people stop complaining about the city’s lies? if you make a promise to me and break it a few days later you can bet i’ll be on your ass for years to come. how can we trust the city with anything if they can’t do what they promise to do?

I work in JOCO and live in KCMO and yes the E Tax is a compelling reason to move out of KCMO.

“Free trash bags” were part of an increase in the earnings tax decades ago but they were just a small part of the promised improvements; police, fire and capital were also areas for the tax. Police costs have risen to 175 million dollars to site one example. (The entire earnings tax is around 175 million)

To somehow suggest that a City should not allow services and programs to evolve over the years is ridiculus and simplistic. Imagine a business that implemented a product or service 25 years ago and did not to change or modify; the business would be bankrupt.

The City now does more for trash collection than it ever contemplated all those years ago; curbside recycling, bulky item pick-up, yard waste drop-off and yes trash collection.
