Outsider? Not quite.

February 22, 2007 |

Al Riederer has a new web site, OnlyOutsider.com, that touts his alleged status as a City Hall outsider, cataloging the combined 89 years of City Hall experience of several other candidates.

Al says

“I’ve spent my career a long way from City Hall, its backroom deals and wasteful spending.”

” I cracked down on waste, fraud and corruption in city government.”

A long way from City Hall??? Al spent 12 years just across the street in the Jackson County Courthouse, which puts waste, fraud, and corruption on a whole other level.

It’s amazing that someone who spent over a decade at KC’s epicenter of bad government can talk about reform with a straight face.

Rather than throw accusations around - why don’t you come up with some concrete examples about Albert?

I know you are backing Funkhouser but please be specific when you are attacking Albert. A general “all of JACO is corrupt” is ill-informed.

Am I correct that Albert has never worked on City Hall? YES.

But otherwise I enjoy your blog.

    BlogKC isn’t backing any candidate.

How about lawyers donating to his campaign who are also having a case heard in Reiderer’s wifes court. The larger issue is that no one lives in a glass house. And for someone who was this counties DA doesn’t mean he isn’t an insider. If its city hall or jackson county it’s all part of the same machine. It’s as if al is saying that he’s not part of the car engine because he’s a seatbelt. Its a lame argument. And he IS just as much an insider as the rest.

“all jackson county government is corrupt” may be a sweeping generalization, but it is spot-on with the views of the average, non-lawyer voter — especially in the northland and in johnson county. why is johnson county important? because they’re watching very closely to see if the status quo gets disrupted, which will hopefully open the door to proper bi-state and metro-wide cooperation, which is critical to advancing public transportation.

Its “i” before “e” when it comes to Riederer.

It’s a pretty good site, actually, and some of us have been around long to remember Riederer and to know him as a decent guy and to remember his work cleaning up city government. I think he’d be a pretty good mayor.

Just because he can clean up government, it doesn’t mean he can run a city.

You can say whatever you want to about Riederer, but looking at who is behind his campaign, to call him an outsider says only one thing to me:

    Riederer is a Lierer.

I just found this site and feel enormously ignorant and uninformed - and concerned. What corruption are you referring to? Where can I go to learn more and become more informed?

Johnson County will never cooperate with Jackson County on anything except the most minimal things. They know how much better they are and how much better they always will be and that they can get by without Jackson County/Kansas City quite well.

Albert Riederer is definitely my choice for mayor of K. C. He is a man of great personal integrety and has the charisma to pull the city together. I knew his father well. Albert is one of 13 children. One sister has Downs Syndrome and Albert and his wife have been her guardian and caretaker for years. These are truly excellent people. He is truly a man of his word, and when he says he’ll do something, HE WILL!

Couldn’t agree more, D’Ann. Riederer is a very good man who deserves to win this race.

He is a good man; I go to church with him and he is my neighbor. However, if he is elected, you KNOW the potential is there for him to be “bought”, considering Sandy Midkiff (his wife) is a judge. I know he has lawyers around town writing him checks as fast as they can, hoping for favors down the line. His claim that he is an outsider is ridiculous, absolute laughable nonsense. Again, I’m not accusing him of being a crook, but he has some connections (including Shields, Glorioso, et al) that really worry me. I just can’t imagine this won’t cause trouble down the line.

Marie, There is potential for ANYTHING to happen to ANY CANDIDATE. Your logic is sloppy and your inuendo (saying he has connections with Shields and Glorioso), shows that although you may see him in the pew, you obviously don’t attend often enough to really KNOW the man. He is highly ethical and is a very good man. Maybe you should attend more often…..

I’m there every Sunday, Judy, as well as every Wednesday morning. And BTW, I joined the church to be closer to God and learn to live/have support for living a Christlike existence….not to be politically bullied. Please note that I said he is a good man, and I was only talking about potential for impropriety, if not the appearance of impropriety. Why don’t you think about giving up nastiness for Lent?

  16. kiki on February 27, 2007 10:05 am

Marie, the line about Sandy Midkiff getting bought off is really one of the most troubling things to come out of the Funkhouser camp. Al Riederer and Sandy Midkiff are good people, and it’s shameful to see Funkhouser supporters picking up their talking points from Jeff Roe or Pat Gray.

Kansas City deserves better than that kind of garbage.

I’m having a hard time understanding why the fact he has a sister with Down’s Syndrome somehow qualifies him to be mayor?

I mowed his lawn back in high school and I never saw him kick his dog. One year, he nursed a sick bird back to health. Obviously he would be a great mayor!

  18. Marie on February 27, 2007 10:17 am

Kiki, I KNOW Albert and Sandy are good people a couple of times, and I was only talking about the POTENTIAL for it to happen. Just voicing what was on my mind. It’s a BLOG, remember? My God, take it easy. And just for your information, I DIDN’T EVEN VOTE FOR FUNKHOUSER.

  19. Marie on February 27, 2007 10:24 am

Alan - I don’t get it either. Nor do I understand the correlation between the “feat” of putting Berdella behind bars and this being a safer city.
