The blog candidates
February 20, 2007 |
This is the first City Council race of the blog era, and a few candidates have distinguished themselves in the blogosphere. They go beyond the usual brochureware site and use new technologies like blogging, video, and podcasting to communicate directly with potential voters and future constituents. In such a crowded race as this year’s, it is kinda surprising that more candidates haven’t taken advantage of these new and more direct tools tool get their message out.
First place: Mark Forsythe
Mark is running for the 4th District in-district seat. His blog has been active for more than a year, long before any of the other candidates. He has been blogging about many of the current events in the city and providing his honest opinons on key issues. His blog is also an interesting insight into the campaign itself. More than any candidate, Mark “gets it” that blogging is a great way to speak to directly to the voters
Second Place: Deth Im
Deth is also running for the 4th District, but the at-large seat. He’s been blogging for over six months, and has supplemented the posts with several videos. In particular he has a video introducing himself with a great one-on-one quality, including pointers on how to pronounce his name.
Third Place: Mark Funkouser
The Funk is running for mayor. He’s only been blogging for a couple of months, but has already posted some good stuff and more than a little self-deprecation. Unfortunately his blogging seems to have fallen off a bit as we enter the home stretch of the primary campaign. The distinguishing feature on his site is the infamous cat endorsement video that has made the rounds on YouTube and the national media.
Honorable Mention: Becky Nace
Becky’s blog isn’t much of a blog in the traditional sense, but it kinda qualifies. She’s been posting her thoughts about the issues and updates on the campaign since last July. It’s not particularly engaging and doesn’t allow reader interaction via comments, which is surprising for a candidate has historically been very good about responding to constituent concerns and requests.

i was also very disappointed in nace’s blog. maybe roe doesn’t like them because anyone can leave comments.
I’m amazed to see you rank Mr. Funkhouser so low. Isn’t he’s supposed to be all the buzz among the blogging set? Personally, I’ve gotten a little tired of him. I was sort of interested in what he had to say, but his supporters have gotten on my nerves. Not sure who’s getting my vote now, but they were too holier than thou. That’s why it’s really refreshing to see him come in third in your ranking. I’m surprised you haven’t been inundated with posts from his supporters insulting you for your stupidity in not ranking him higher.
