Looks like the Wizards may be going after a different part of the metro for their stadium. The Star has Wizard’s president Robb Heineman saying talks are progressing with developers on the site. This, in the same week the Wizards announced plans to build a practice facility in Swope Park.
Besides the state of Bannister Mall, the area has seen some churn: Bass Pro chose Independence over the site and Quintiles left for Overland Park. However, Cerner recently announced more then 1,000 employees moving to the former Marion Labs building. A soccer stadium and other development would help turn the area around…much more so then building a stadium in a bean field.

Interesting. With the Walmart now closed the area will be suffering even greater loses. I could see this working IF The Wizards complex is at the core of a larger project.
Whatever their plan is, I hope it is a good and feasible one. The Wizards have a good fan base here, that could be expanded.
You think the Wizards are gonna put a stadium in there on they own dime?
And don’t give me that economic impact argument or I’ll hit you so hard it’ll kill your whole family.
Huh, a TIF project in a genuinely deserving neighborhood. Wow, what a concept!
A TIF project in an appropriate neighborhood? If they didn’t want to build a stadium I’d be cheering. What’s wrong with the Sprint center?
The Sprint Center is indoors. MLS is an outdoor soccer league.
“You think the Wizards are gonna put a stadium in there on they own dime?”
The JoCo plan was for the Wizards to build their own stadium.
I hope to god they put the stadium at bannister. That would be great.
I second the comment on this being a very deserving area. It’s right between JoCo and Eastern Jackson county which would give it the potential to draw some sizable crowds. Plus like the other poster stated….there is the opportunity to create new fans.
