Council races go negative
March 26, 2007 |
In the 6th District a flier is circulating that attacks candidate Darrell Curls. It contains what appear to be flat-out lies. Opponent John Sharp denies any connection to the flier.
In the 4th District At-Large there is a flier attacking Doug Gamble for allegedly receiving a TIF for his business. Gamble refutes the attack on his own web site, noting he has never received TIF for his business and only briefly owned 5% of a TIF-eligible hotel. Opponent Beth Gottstein made a similar attack at a recent debate,.
While there is no direct evidence either opponent is behind the negative attacks, both have used the services of political consultant Pat Gray and his NorthStar Marketing Group. Such attack ads are quite common in Gray-managed campaigns. As Becky Nace learned, the company you keep reflects on your own reputation.

That’s nice that you’re trying to be fair here, but does anyone think Gottstein’s campaign wasn’t behind it?
The piece clearly and intentionally lies about Gamble, and we give Gottstein the benefit of the doubt?
I’m not!!!!
The same is true for John Sharp. He can deny it all wants, but those that really know him know he’s famous for negativity. As I understand it, 2 negative pieces went out attacking his opponent. I received one of them and it was paid for by his campaign. How can he deny that? As a career politician, John would have negative campaigns down cold even if he weren’t using Pat Gray.
I agree. And unfortunately, the damage is done once it’s out there.
It is one thing to criticize someone for their policy stances, straight up. It’s another thing to deliberately publish falsehoods, and know they’re falsehoods when you mail them.
This shows how desperate these people are, and reflects poorly on those candidates that are honest.
The anti-Gamble ad was from a group based out of Lake Tapawingo (Blue Springs). I’m not sure how the fourth district race affects them.
I have to agree with Bill. Candidates who pledge to run clean campaigns but who use surrogates to attack their opponents are still running negative campaigns. It doesn’t have Gottstein’s name on it, but it uses her signature attack on Gamble.
The Gamble fliar was from a Barrett’s group…who has all the same ties to Pat Gray. Not that Beth had a shot in hell of winning my vote at any point, but I hope she lost others with it…
Did you see the horrible piece put out by the Gamble campaign with the highlit “Jewish Chronicle” quotation? Looks like someone is trying hard to bring out the KKK voters.
Dan, considering Gamble’s campaign manager is Jewish, as is the fundraiser and his ground campaign person, I am guessing the KKK thing is in your mind only.
When did the jewish chronicle pice hit, and does someone have a scanned copy?
Shorter dj: “She’s a jew, so it’s okay.”
Bill - I think it came out on Friday, and I scanned a copy of the front at my blog, which you can get to by clicking on my name.
Oh come on Dan!
Gamble’s sought quotes that paint Gottstein in an unflattering light. The fact he found those in a brief interview that appeared in The Jewish Chronicle does not make him or anyone else anti-Semitic. The quotes have Gottstein bragging about her fundraising prowess and how she’s been in politics. That’s fair game.
I was on the fence about this race. But stupid bullshit like the TIF flier and the KKK remark just lost Gottstein my vote.
