Dueling fliers

March 27, 2007 |

Gone Mild has a copy of Doug Gamble’s flier against Beth Gottstein.  This one comes directly from the Gamble campaign, not some shady third party.  Gone Mild argues that taking quotes from Jewish Chronicle means it’s Antisemetic.

Wow - I’m a little dizzy from the spin you just put on what I wrote.

If you don’t see the message behind pulling a quotation from the Jewish Chronicle talking about how Beth is not afraid of seeking money, I’m not certain I can enlighten you. And I’m not saying it’s untrue that Beth is Jewish - it’s just a shame that the Gamble campaign is putting that at the top of its campaign pieces at this late stage.

Dan, that is such horseshit, it’s rediculous. The entire Gamble campaign team is Jewish from what I hear. Beth’s quote in the Chronicle perfectly matches the criticism they’re using it for. Religion has nothing to do with it.

If they hadn’t cited the source of the quote, you’d be screaming that they made it up. As it is, they’ve made the word Jewish (as in Jewish Chronicle) so small, it is hardly noticeable (unless of course you’re looking for things to pull out of it and cry foul).

And I’m sorry, Dan, but if you think an anti-semitic voter would miss the fact that someone named “Gottstein” is Jewish…

Wow. I got that mailer and I didn’t see the word Jewish any where. Maybe that’s because when so many flyers are arriving in the mail, I only look at what’s in big print - then throw them away. My mind is pretty made up by the time all the ‘junk mail’ starts arriving, so I rarely take time to read any of it. It seems like somebody (Dan), though, is a little touchy.

Thanks for making the rather shaky fundraising and Jewish connection for me, Dan. I certainly didn’t see it when I looked at the mailer. But I wasn’t carefully parsing every single word for hidden anti-Semitic slurs. Frankly, I still can’t see it.

I know you’ve been quick to warn about the anti-Semitic tones of this race since the primary. But it’s never quite panned out. If this pathetic bullshit is the best Gottstein has to offer then she deserves to lose.

I won’t apologize for being alert to anti-Semitism, and I’ll also point out that in her defense of the piece, Diana Kander (from the Gamble campaign) acknowledges “I can see your point re: the appearance of citing the Jewish chronicle”. Now, she goes on to give a good defense, but at least she’s honest about it and acknowledges the appearance is there. It’s good to see some integrity . . .

And Patrick, Gottstein didn’t offer this, I did.
