New Downtown restaurants

While the Power & Light District will be a ghetto of beige national chains, local flavor is developing quite nicely around its periphery. Many entrepeneurs are investing in anticipation of the autumn opening of the P&L District and the Sprint Center arena. Some recent additions:

13th Street Bar & Grill – This old legal haunt in the Government District has be reborn with a nice makeover, healthier food, and no smoking. But it’s still a great place to eavesdrop on an old lawyer or judge pontificating about the good old days. 417 East 13th Street (13th and Locust, one block north of the arena).

Souperman – Soups, salads, sandwiches, etc. 1724 Main Street, ground floor of the new Barkley ad agency headquarters in the old TWA building. Check out Noodletown’s review.

MAC: Magazines and Coffee - A real newstand is on its way to KC! The place is brand new and still ordering magazines, but the coffee is ready to go. 1722 Main Street, next door to Souperman.

Cheesehead Sandwiches – Breakfast and lunch during the work week. 1616 Grand Avenue.

The Kansas City Cafe – not sure what it is yet, but a sign in the window in the 1500 block of Grand says it’s coming soon.

It also looks like someone is renovating the old Club 1020 bar and grill at 1020 McGee, 3 blocks north of the Sprint Center arena.

It’s great to see new places to eat downtown, but Cheeseheads and Souperman are only open weekdays until 3:00 – not very long hours. Still it’s very promising and perhaps once the Sprint Center and the Power & Light District are up and running, these restaurants will have enough traffic so they can expand their hours.

Also, there is the new Willie’s Pub & Pool at 1501 Grand – near the Sprint Center just on the other side of I-670.
I hesitate to mention this place since it is a Mizzou bar. :)

BTW, the link for Souperman is SOUPKC.COM,
    NOT kcsoup.com.

I wonder what happened to the plans to put a Hayes Hamburgers and Chili on Grand? It was talked about quite a bit last year but nothing has materialized.
