Poll: Funkhouser has narrow lead over Brooks

It what seems to be the first media polling of the race, KCTV-5 has commissioned a SurveyUSA poll of the mayoral race.  Mark Funkhouser has a slight lead over Al Brooks (48% to 45%), but it’s within the margin of error.  The poll breaks out largely along racial lines – Brooks with 83% of black voters and Funkhouser with 62% of whites and 67% of Hispanics.

One would tend to expect a more even split among black voters, similar to what we’re seeing with the whites and browns. Funk can’t pull 80% of whites. I wonder if a Latino candidate would get 80%+ of browns.

Does this mean white people are more likely to vote for a black candidate than blacks are to vote for a white candidate? CURIOUS.

    Yes.

With Cleaver, whites have a precedent of trusting a black in this office.

White mayors don’t have a good history keeping promises or attention on black constituents. Even if black candidates don’t either (McFadden-Weaver) people will take a known over an unknown.

And that is tooo bad for the black community, since a vote for Brooks is a vote for the status quo.

I think the irony in this is that when you look at their political stances, Funkhouser’s stances of not granting TIF to high-dollar developers downtown and focusing $$$ in higher need neighborhoods and neighborhood services would actually be better for the average black person in this city, where as Brooks should be the favorite among the elite developers…most of whom are white.

And yet, the votes will go down more or less the opposite of that because of the underlying racism factor…
