Lots of folks are talking about light rail, but few are actually looking at the details and all of our options. The city and the KCATA are supposed to do an in-depth study, but those results are at least a year away, maybe two. Over at the Kansas City Post, Mark Forsythe has been a great series explaining all of the different rail options and types of rail vehicles. It’s better than any coverage the local media has ever done.

If we are going to have trasit in KC it won’t be Light Rail because of the high cost, about $50-$70 million a mile.
The best bet would be streetcars with a 8-10 mile loop.Cost of the cars are $800-$1,000,000 a mile and not have to move underground line. Local CID could help with funding,Parks and Rec. and business’s could fund a car with ad space.[$5-10 a mile]This would be a start up line and we could learn from it before adding more routes.

That’s $800,000 to a million a mile for streetcars. aAnd $5-$10 million per mile to build.
