Actually, no, Ann Coulter is not moving downtown or anywhere else in river city. But the company that publishes her newspaper column might be moving from the Country Club Plaza to Downtown. Andrews McNeel wants as much as $4 million in TIF subsidies to renovate the historic Boley Building at 12th and Walnut Streets.

This should be an interesting test of Mayor Funkhouser’s economic incentive agenda. This proposal isn’t bringing any new jobs into the city, it’s simply transferring a company from one booming area to another booming area. It also fails the challenge that the mayor made in his inauguration speech when he said “the first TIF proposal that reaches my desk had darn well better be from the East Side.”

One can hope that Funkhouser will stand against this kind of subsidy for a relocation of a few miles within the city. Of course if he does then comes the threats to move to Johnson County.

I agree that this is a ridiculous use of incentives. I am disappointed that the EDC staff is even considering presenting such a proposal to the City Council.
