McCaskill’s Fraud Squad

June 18, 2007 |

Missouri Junior Senator Claire McCaskill has returned from Iraq and reports (here, here, and here) that the waste and fraud may be “beyond calculation”. McCaskill, who was previously Missouri State Auditor and is now a member of the powerful Senate Armed Services Committee, spent the weekend poring over reconstruction with fellow Democratic Senator Tom Carper of Delaware. In a stroke of “don’t-think-it’s-cuz-I’m-a-Dem” sound-byte genius, she compares the current crop of waste, fraud, and mismanagement to similar mistakes the Pentagon made in Clinton-era Kosovo.

Truman’s committee on waste in World War II probably helped get him the VP nod. Is that Claire’s plan? Who knows and who cares, as long as Claire continues to provide leadership like she does.

I’ll believe that she is providing true leadership if she doesn’t back off the stance she took on the immigration bill, in her recent Op-Ed piece in the KC Star. I’m guessing however she’ll vote with the democratic pack which ever they end up choosing to go.

Isn’t her party in the majority in the House and the Senate? Why wasn’t there anything in the latest funding bill to address this waste and corruption?

Maybe because she didn’t know about it until she went to Iraq.

Props to McCaskill. Her analysis seemed (thankfully) free of the usual party-line tropes and whatnot. And it’s refreshing to see a Democrat identify waste and inefficiency. Typically Dems just whine that the Republicans aren’t spending enough money, so I appreciate her work. Not everything has to be Dem v GOP.

Get real. The waste and corruption has been going on for a long time and isn’t a secret. This should have been addressed in the war funding bill.
