Municipal’s new roof

If you haven’t noticed yet, this is the new look of Municipal Auditorium. This blazingly bright gizmo was added onto the west side of the roof as part of a recent $13 million renovation of the Music Hall, which is located inside the building. The roof was raised to provide room for bigger sets for the touring Broadway shows – something that city leaders long touted as a pressing need for a brand new performing arts center.

We have former Mayor Kay Barnes and former City Councilmember Chuck Eddy to thank for this new blemish on the facade of our beloved Art Deco treasure. Eddy was also the prime instigator in the seizure of one of Downtown’s few plots of green space for the creation of a tennis court in the adjacent Barney Allis Plaza. Chuck may be gone, but his work will remain for years to come.

Ugh, are you serious? I had seen this in recent weeks but I thought it was a temporary structure to shelter a section of the roof being repaired or something. No way they’re really going to leave it like that… this looks even worse than the Nelson addition in daylight.

  2. Perhaps it is temporary, I sure hope you’re right.

did that thing fall off of the bloch building? :)

  4. LMRICE says:

the tennis court in the middle of barney allis is worse!

  5. ScooterJ says:

I was find with the tennis court (it actually looked kinda cool) until they started installing the bleachers. Now it looks hideous.

Now here’s architecture to get righteously indignant about…at least the Bloch Building was paid for by private funds…we’re helping foot the bill for this one and no one even asked us to weigh in on the design.

Now people understand what the sixth district has known all along about Chuck Eddy. At least he didn’t get his memorial bridge over the Blue River.

Tennis courts, Bloch Building, Shuttlecocks, Temporary, Barnes & Eddy…

There seems to be some connection among these words, some common theme. I’m not sure if it’s a bad joke, a bad dream, or just bad taste.
