New magazines launching

July 21, 2007 |

Two new local magazines are starting up this summer.

Urban Times is determined to re-connect Kansas City with its core and re-claim the concept of urban as positive and desirable.  Considering how much KC has abandoned itself over the last generation, it’s a daunting task. Fortunately the magazine’s debut issue is up to the task with good design and good writing.

Urban Times is available at news boxes throughout the central corridor from Downtown to the Plaza, and online at urbantimeskc.com

Greenability is a upcoming environmentally-focused lifestyle magazine.  The publication’s web site promises helpful info and tips on green living with a very local perspective.  This one also looks promising.

Greenability is offering a free copy of its upcoming debut issue online at greenabilitymagazine.com

I got a copy of Urban Times and was impressed. You can tell it was probably pretty expensive to produce, and I wish them well. Lots and lots of really nice pictures, and some good articles as well. I keep it at my salon and show it to everyone. It’s exactly what the city needs right now.

Actually Urban Times, although nice and slick, was one long advertisement to buy a condo/loft through Boveri real estate. Pass.

what’s with kansas city anyway? anyone check out the way they do things in chicago? they got a pretty cool system going up there. it could definitely be “greener”. even stl has got clubs for live music and a bit of class downtown. kansas city has so much potential!

check out http://cbs2chicago.com/ and watch the video about pitchfork music festival. they’ve got a little pink haired dude who runs around and interviews the cool kids! that’s a novel idea if you ask me. get the KIDS in on it.

Yeah, there are ads for lofts and condos. So what? Ads are necessary. Do you have any idea how expensive it is to publish a magazine like that? ALL magazines have ads.

Urban Times was like reading one long info-mercial for buying a loft downtown. The “stories” felt like they were selling something. And the cover says it’s five bucks a copy, this first issue may be free…

Are there any stories about how great Kansas City is living in the urban area east of Troost? Or maybe near Quindaro? How about even the West Side or the North East?

Kansas City needs a local magazine that is not a vehicle for selling lofts or luxury crap. We need a magazine that talks about living in the Metro Area, about goings on, history, culture and our future.

The people who finance the mag & pay for ads are the ones who get their word out whether it be for condos/lofts or otherwise, DUH! The articles showed diversity in the arts & cultural scene & the fact that, yes, there is LIFE in the KC downtown & surrounding area. So be it that some portions of the mag reflect “luxury crap” but we should be proud that we have a pretty good economy here & can enjoy a nice lifestyle should we choose to participate in it. Overall, the mag shows great promise to be one of longevity…cool articles, great fashion, good info., and yes, ads !!! Keep up the good work Urban Times. Looking forward to the next issues.
