Readying the Rink

July 10, 2007 |

KSHB 41 reports that the concrete for the Sprint Center ice rink is being poured today. While it may open on schedule (unlike a, ahem, prominent neighbor), there is still no anchor tenant. Would it matter if the opening event were a Jimmy Buffet or The Police concert? Check out the chatter at the KC Rag forum to see what’s being rumored for the big October surprise:

I was thinking more on the line of “Monster Trucks” or “Dirt bike racing”.

Sorry to all the naysayers, but a successful sell-out Police concert would be a really good thing for the city and the arena. And even if you didn’t want the arena, you’re stuck with it now. So why not root for things to go well instead of pooh-poohing everything?

I would prefer Insane Clown Posse myself.

Is the Sprint Center big enough to contain Sting’s ego?

I fail to see how a single sold-out concert can be “really good” for the city, especially when the nearby entertainment district won’t be open for business until some time next year. And without a full-time tenant, the arena will sit empty more often than not.

Maybe kiki from the Barnes For Congress campaign can elaborate.

    It’s gonna be Elton John!
