NY Times features Hermann
September 28, 2007 | 3 Comments

The New York Times has a feature on Hermann. Of course it includes the usual talking points of wineries, German heritage, and Missouri’s Rhineland. But it’s a bit frightening to learn that one of our state’s most beloved spots is becoming a second home market for St. Louis, only 80 miles away. It’s even more frightening to learn that developers might be targeting the town as a warehouse for the next generation of suburbatroids.
“We figure it’ll be removed from the sprawl of St. Louis for another 15 or 20 years.”

Another 15 or 20 years, huh? So when will Kansas City and St. Louis overlap? Maybe 45 to 60 years at that rate?
Hahaha Dave, I agree. The sooner peak oil happens, the better. I don’t think it’ll be a long wait, but it’s gonna seem like an eternity. I pray every day for $8/gallon gasoline. In fact, a friend and I are planning a self-sufficient 20-acre community where all who are willing to work will be provided for. It, and not the SUV’s and McMansions, are the future. The suburbs are the slums of tomorrow, and the shopping malls will be thrift markets. At our farm, we’ll be growing organics and heating and cooling with solar power, and using root cellars.
