Arena debut is A-OK

October 14, 2007 |

So it looks like the Sprint Center opened to rave reviews, suburbanites found parking, and the world continued to revolve.  It’s interesting that after weeks of whipping up an “Oh My Fucking God Where Will People Park?” frenzy, the Star couldn’t find a single Northlander or Leawoodie to complain about the horrors of parking and walking in the big, bad city.

    I’m glad everything went well.

I don’t think The Star was “whipping up” anything.

In fact, The Star printed several helpful maps and info on where to park to make things EASIER for those visiting downtown.

And we get it - you don’t like suburbanites. You don’t need to keep being such a dick about it. Why can’t we all come together and hate on people from St. Louis?

Of course the Star whipped up the parking non-story. No one else was talking about it until they started running stories about city leaders “scrambling” to find parking lots. The Star knows there is plenty of parking Downtown, they have even run stories about the negative consequences of so many surface lots and gigantic garages.

Granted, it’s not as bad as fanning the flames of the Francis Semler debate. For that story they called up La Raza and the NAACP to get their “reaction” to a controversy they didn’t even know about.

People were talking about lack of parking downtown BEFORE they even built the arena. I remember this was one of the reasons polls showed that people were against a downtown baseball park.

As for surface lots, there ARE negative consequences. Mainly because it’s a waste of valuable downtown space, and it also looks terrible. Downtowns should have some street parking as well as plenty of multi-level parking garages to accomodate.

But which complaint are you going with? Are you saying that The Star is trying to tell people there isn’t enough parking, or that there is too much?

I was one of the people who attended last week’s Sprint Center Grand Opening, and I decided not to mess with downtown parking at all. I rode downtown using The MAX - a very easy and satisfying solution to parking issues.

Note to blogkc, the Mainstream that posted first on his thread isn’t mainstream (me). You don’t have to publish this comment - just letting you know.

i took the bus (the MAX actually) downtown and it was cheap, easy and fast. And we didn’t have to pay or worry about parking. If you don’t live on a busline, you can “park and ride”. For instance there are lots in Waldo, Brookside, Crestwood, etc. KC also has many cab companies. Funny, I’ve barely heard anyone mention these options.

I’m sure DeAnne Smith did her best…

Thats too bad the MAX doesn’t go right in front of the Sprint Arena, but I see the reason why they didn’t do it that way.

Where is the best MAX stop to get off at when one goes to the Sprint Arena?

I think the closest stop is on 12th Street at Walnut or Grand.

12th and Grand. It’s called the “Arena” stop. One block from the arena.

William Whyte, a prominent researcher on how cities work said in a 1988 book that no city has a true shortage of downtown parking, yet no city is free of complaints that there is not enough.

Someone will need to keep people informed of events downtown because when the Music Hall and Bartle Hall hava a event people will need to go early to park. When the time comes for Big 12 and the Auto show going at the same time and the work force is downtown at the same time we will see just how much parking we have. I think the buses will do a good business that week

By then, there will be enough to do and see downtown that it will be more inviting to park on the perimeter of downtown and discover things you would totally miss if traveling in a car. But yes, people should use the buses more. This is a city after all.
