70s-80s icons pass

December 4, 2007 |

Two guys who had a big influence over development Kansas City in the 1970s and 1980s have passed on.

Sherman Dreiseszun was a banker and developer who built malls like Metro North, Oak Park, Metcalf South, and Indian Springs. He also built the Downtown office tower One Kansas City Place, still the tallest building in Missouri.

Ralph Myers, Sr. was the father Kansas City architecture, as well as all of sports architecture.  With partner Clarence Kivett, he designed the Truman Sports Complex, KCI Airport, the InterContinental Hotel on the Plaza, and many others.  Myers and Kivett spawned hundreds other architects and practically created the genre of sports architecture, with KC as its capital.

Interesting stuff, and good post. I wasn’t aware of those two individuals and their contributions.
