Bus tax renewal on the way, ridership surges
January 24, 2008 |
KC Light Rail reports that City Council has placed a renewal of the 3/8th cent bus tax on the April ballot. This is a renewal of an existing tax, and it will expire in 15 years.
Also this week, Prime Buzz reported that the KC Area Transportation Authority saw a 6% rise in bus ridership in 2007, once again attaining the 15 million rider level last seen in 2001. Let’s Go KC says that bus ridership is up even more in the Missouri suburbs.

Other than above referenced item on Prime Buzz, I can’t find any Star articles on the subject. Am I missing something?
As a regular transit rider, I find the Stars neglect of this story a bit anoying.
I think the Star is in cahoots with the ATA to keep the publicity of this special election to a minimum. If mostly only transit riders know about it, which way do you suppose the vote will go?
I looked up the results from the 2003 vote on the transit sales tax. It won 70/30. What I’d like to see is some polling data to see how much the 15 duration and the mess surrounding light rail have cut into that margin.
The less that is said or written about the tax renewal, the better chance it will pass.
