KC vs STL, Police edition
February 5, 2008 |
Yesterday it was redevelopment, and today local control of police departments is another issue where Kansas City and St. Louis ought to be BFF. Both are governed by a board appointed by the governor, not the mayor. Virtually everyone who ran for mayor and council in KC last year agreed we needed local control, but no one wanted to push for it.
Now St. Louis is pushing for local police control and is forging an odd alliance with rural interests in order to get enough votes in Jeff City. Where is the KC delegation? Why aren’t they partnering with St. Louis? At the very least, why aren’t they making sure that the KCPD is included in the bill?

Are many of the KC politicos Democrats? Perhaps they have the same LACK OF SPINE as those sent to Washington, the ones who ran on a platform of ending the war and bringing accountability to government, but now in office - have done NOTHING.
The Republicans might be perverts and crooks who unthinkingly march in lockstep, but they get things accomplished - even if those things are detrimental to democracy or contrary to logic.
If only we could get politicians with true backbones to speak for THE PEOPLE.
I used to think that until Funkhouser got elected and the public turned on him for not acting like all the other politicians.
I was behind Funk too (still am, I think), but there is a difference between having a spine and being completely inflexible. Especially when the inflexibility is detrimental to the city. The Wayne Cauthen incident was handled very POORLY by Mayor Funk.
The KC delegation includes both Republicans and Democrats. The problems of not standing for our fair share of state resources is a problem across both parties.
