New sidewalk recycling bins

You might have noticed these new bins showing up on sidewalks in areas with a lot of foot traffic. The city calls them “Pedestrian Recycling PartnerBins.” I’m not sure about the pedestrian recycling part of it, since they seem a little small to hold actual pedestrians. But they do give you a place to deposit your discarded cans and plastic alongside the trash. The “PartnerBin” part just means that they are supported by advertisements, which you can purchase for $200 per month per “PartnerBin.” The first bins are located Downtown, Midtown, and 18th & Vine.

The City of Kansas City, Mo., Public Works Department is making recycling easier by placing recycling PartnerBins on sidewalks with significant pedestrian traffic. The PartnerBins, which are part of the City’s continuing commitment to sustainability, provide receptacles for both regular trash and recyclable cans and plastic bottles.
The first 25 PartnerBins were installed early last week in the City Market, Crossroads area, Westport and the 18th and Vine Jazz District. If successful, the City plans to install PartnerBins throughout the city.
“This new program will give pedestrians the opportunity to dispose of recyclable cans and plastic bottles in an environmentally responsible way,” said Michael Shaw, manager of the Solid Waste Division of the Public Works Department. “It highlights the City’s dedication to environmental sustainability and will make our streets cleaner.”
The name “PartnerBin” represents the concept that is created when organizations sponsor a bin and demonstrate their commitment to a sustainable community. The PartnerBins have a place on the exterior for a sponsor message. Proceeds from sponsorships are used to sustain the program without using funds that are committed to other solid waste programs.
The City is working with Prime Point Media, a firm that has successfully operated similar programs in other cities and on college campuses, to manage the sponsorship portion of the program. Organizations interested in sponsorship opportunities should contact Prime Point Media by calling (800) 980-0094.

It just makes sense. We don’t have enough pedestrians to just throw them away.
I think it’s terrific. A lot of pedestrian trash consists of beverage containers - aluminum cans and plastic bottles.
I’d say it’s progressive of them, but they’ve been doing this on the West coast for at least 20 years now. Still, better late than never!
