Today the big news in the Star is that city officials are schwinging at the prospect of a gigantic airplane factory being built at KCI. But let’s pause for a minute and think about the wisdom of handing out enormous tax breaks to a besieged industry. Oil prices are only going up in the future, and airlines have made little progress in switching to alternative fuels. The days of electric or even biodiesel airplanes are far off.
Meanwhile, The Kansas City Post argues that we should pursue new green energy industries so we can set ourselves up to be a player in the future. Our city leaders give a lot of lip service to green this and green that, but it looks like the folks they have hired recruit new businesses are firmly stuck in the 20th century.

After looking at the spec for the plane they’d be making, it’s said to be a greener aircraft with a lot less noise pollution. I also noticed that Bomadier is a provider of light rail transit systems; so it seems to me like a pretty good partnership could be formed here.
