Tuesday was the first day for candidates to file for the August 2008 primary election, and there are already some interesting races shaping up…

State Senate District 17 (Clay County)
Sandra Aust of Kansas City is running against incumbent Republican Luann Ridgeway of Smithville. Aust is a former KC Parks Board Chair and was a key leader in the Missouri Cures initiative to protect scientific research. This should be an interesting match since the 17th is a top target Democrats’ efforts to retake the house, not mention Senator Ridgeway’s vote to break a filibuster and bar stem cell research from state universities.

State House District 40 (River Market, Columbus Park, Old Northeast)
JJ Rizzo is once again challenging incumbent John Burnett for the Democratic nomination. Rizzo came really close to knocking off Burnett last time around.

State House District 44 (Waldo and Hickman Mills)
Competition looks fierce to replace term-limited JeneƩ Lowe in this Democratic stronghold. The candidates are teacher Mary Cosgrove Spence, lobbyist Amy Coffman, and Afghanistan veteran and attonery Jason Kander.

The Secretary of State’s office has the full list for all races.

Another interesting note is that it looks like Kay Barnes has yet to make the trip to Jeff City to officially file for the 6th Congressional District.
