Justus endorses lobbyist

April 6, 2008 |

Prime Buzz reports that State Senator Jolie Justs (D-10) is endorsing lobbyist Amy Coffman for the 44th District Missouri House seat, which covers Waldo and Red Bridge. Rumor has it that State Rep. Beth Low (D-39) is also on board. Normally the career ladder takes people in the opposite direction, from legislator to lobbyist.  Even though they are Democrats, it’s interesting that two sitting legislators are supporting a lobbyist after the last four years of Republican lobbyists run amok in Jefferson City.

It’s also interesting that you neglected to include the detail that she was a lobbyist for the AARP, and that she resigned from the position to run for office. Would mentioning that she was an advocate for the interests of retirees make her sound less evil?

Why does it matter what she lobbied for? The point is the influence of lobbyists over legislators. This sets a bad precedent for any interest group. If it’s the AARP going into the legislator this year, then next year it could just as easily by the NRA or anti-choice folks.

There are regulations on legislators becoming lobbyists, and there should be the other way as well.

She has received several more endorsements as well including recently the Committee for County Progress (Jackson County), the Missouri AFL-CIO and many others (http://www.amycoffman.com/endorse.html).
