Update on KC Climate Protection Plan
April 17, 2008 |
Show Me Progress has an update on the progress of KCMO’s climate protection plan. They also have audio of Dennis Murphy, the city’s Chief Environmental Officer, explaining the program at recent conference in St. Louis.
The city is actually doing a pretty decent job with things like alternative fuels, green roofs, etc. Unfortunately there is little to no progress on switching commuters from single-occupancy automobiles to carpools, public transit, bicycling, or walking. That’s important because 30% of the city’s greenhouse gas emissions come from automobiles.

Let’s spend a large sum of money on making the City green when our budget is in trouble and the economy isn’t at its best.
“Green” can be cost-efficient. It is not just some hippy dippy crap that’s being done to make people feel better about themselves.
Most of the city maintenance vehicles run on compressed natural gas. More would be better, but we’ll have to be patient.
