The Missouri Alliance for Historic Preservation has released their 2008 list of the most endangered historic sites, and five metro area properties are on that list.

Truman Historic District - The neighborhood around Harry S. Truman’s home in Independence suffers from neglect, fires, and poor city planning. Several homes have even been torn down for parking lots.

Janssen Place - This semi-private street in the Hyde Park neighborhood features very nice entry gates, but they suffer from neglect and weather. It’s surprising that such an affluent street would end up on this list.

Wheatley-Provident Hospital - the city’s last remaining African-American hospital building.  It has been vacant for years and has yet to see any of benefit from revitalization of the nearby 18th & Vine historic district.

18th & Vine - While the struggling jazz district has added several new buildings with apartments and a few businesses, many of the original historic structures are being neglected and falling into disrepair.  The redevelopment authority received federal funds to repair them, but has not yet acted.

Banneker School, Parkville - This one room school house in Platte County was the county’s first school for African-Americans, but today it is neglected and vandalized. The Platte County Historical Society was able to take posession of the building, but is now letting it set idle.

The only one with which I’m really familiar is the Truman home area, and it breaks my heart to read how the area is crumbling and falling apart. I love Harry Truman; his spirit lives on in the area.

What about the Quindaro ruins over in KCK?

Is it possible for “ruins” to be neglected?

Janssen Place??? I agree that is a very strange one to have made the list, especially since each home pays over $300/year for homeowner’s association dues (according to my MLS data). Where is the money going if not for grounds keeping and upkeep?
