Northland suburbs looking to follow KC’s lead on smoking ban
May 15, 2008 |
It looks like several Northland suburbs are starting to think about following Kansas City’s lead on enacting a smoking ban. With several suburbs almost completey surrounded by KCMO, they don’t have much choice in at least considering it. Parkville and North Kansas City have started talking about it, and Liberty is starting to gauge public opinion. And it may be public pressure that forces the issue, with cities scrambling make sure they aren’t the last one to get on board.
“If only one municipality lacked a smoking ban in the Northland… Jokes would ensue and nicknames like “The Ashtray of the Northland” would likely stick”

“Follow KC’s lead on smoking ban”
I wouldn’t describe KC as a leader on this issue - rather like a reluctant follower. Other cities took the lead.
I think KC is definitely a leader on this side of the state line and this side of the state. Who cares who’s following and who’s leading? We need to stop pandering to the addicts and start thinking about the health of our citizens.
With a comprehensive smoking ordinance metro-wide, no one can complain their lack of business is because smokers are just going to the neighboring town to drink, smoke, shoot pool or anything else. It’ll be a looong drive to a smoke-filled bar.
I applaud the Northland for NOT wanting to be a giant ashtray.
It’s the wave of the present and future; get used to the idea.
With these smoking bans being put in place, my friends and I can finally go out far more frequently than we’ve done in the past.
