Last week Governor Matt Blunt issued a big F-You to the air quality in Kansas City when he denied a request for our region to be exempted from Missouri’s law requiring gasoline to contain 10% ethanol. Ethanol produces more air pollution, which is big problem here in KC where we already struggle comply with federal air quality standards.  Violating those rules could mean expensive things like restrictions on factories and annual pollution inspections on private automobiles.

One likely reason the Governor is hanging on so tightly to an increasingly unpopular ethanol requirement is that his brother Andy Blunt is an investor in an ethanol plant that benefits from the law. Another investor is the wife Congressman Sam Graves.  Exempting the state’s biggest city could take away a big chunk of business from that plant, and ultimately money from the Blunt and Graves families.

Besides, can we really expect good stewardship of our natural resources from a governor who makes a 140 mile commute to work in a fleet of SUVs?
