Today The Kansas City Post raised a great topic for discussion – finding someone to lead the charge regional transit. Mark’s suggestion is Jackson County Executive Mike Sanders, and it actually sounds pretty good. Mayor Funkhouser has done a good job getting it on the agenda, but eventually we need a cheerleader to out and convince people to vote for it. Sanders is popular and well-respected in the Missouri suburbs. He may just be the man for the job.

How about a cheerleader who is actually willing to step foot on one of our existing buses to lead by example at least once in a while? Funk lives very close to the MAX line, which would drop him off right by City Hall. Haven’t ever heard about him doing so though. How disappointing from someone who wants to be the leadership for transit.
Sanders would be good.
One of our readers wrote to tell us they spotted Funk riding the bus to City Hall just last week. Just because you haven’t seen him on your bus doesn’t mean he doesn’t ride it.
Thanks for the link! I struggled with several different angles for that editorial. One sentence that was removed before the final edit was that I don’t think a regional transit plan could survive another holiday letter.
I realize a regional transit plan involves more than just Jackson County, but like you pointed out Sanders is popular and he isn’t known as “mayor one and done” behind his back.
