With all of the competing bus, rail, and gondola plans out there it can be hard to figure out what’s going on. Fortunately most of the credible plans do fit into a big picture. The Mid-America Regional Council has just released an update to the Smart Moves regional transit plan.

It calls for a network of transit corridors connecting the various parts of the metro, and allows for a range of technologies from express buses to MAX-style Bus Rapid Transit, to light rail, to commuter rail. It’s up to each local city or county to either build their own segment, or join with others to share the task.

KCMO already has the ball rolling with a November election on a light rail starter line through the central corridor, plus plans for MAX on Troost Avenue. KCK is starting to plan for a MAX line on State Avenue.  The three Missouri-side counties are working on Mayor Funkhouser’s regional plan that corresponds with at least half of the map below.

Red lines - urban corridors that can be MAX or light rail
Blue lines - long-distance corridors that can be express bus or commuter rail
Yellow lines - express buses with higher frequencies and fewer stops

I like the Smart Moves concept, but I have a big concern; if the ATA can’t keep the simple, 7-mile MAX line on schedule, how are these protracted routes gonna work? Hint: Try taking MAX on a Sunday when it only runs every 30 minutes, and you’ll see what I mean; ATA doesn’t care.
