Big changes for big trash

One of the big services cut in the recent city budget cuts was bulky item pickup, the service that collects your old couches, broken appliances, and castoff bowflexes.  You know, the junk that is too big for a trash bag and too useless eBay or Craigslist.

Instead of regular monthly or semi-monthly pickup days, you now have to make an appointment in advance.  The city will still pick up your crap at least once a month, but only if you call ahead and schedule it.  You can do that by calling the 3-1-1 Action Center (or 513-1313), but sadly you can’t schedule it online. While the new system is more of a hassle, it is still much better than in most suburbs where they only do it once a year.

Unfortunately this is going to make life harder for the professional scavengers who used to prowl the regular monthly routes.
