Presidential fundraising in Missouri

MSNBC has a new analysis of presidential fundraising in key counties in battleground states for the US Presidential election.  They surmising that fundraising performance in these counties is an indication of how the vote might turn out in November.

Here in Missouri, McCain continues to lead in the polls, yet Obama leads in fundraising and has made  inroads in some very Republican areas. In total money raised in Missouri, Obama leads $3 million to $2 million.  In particular, the usually Republican counties of St. Charles and Christian.   He also leads in evenly divided Clay County, and the two are virtually tied in Platte and Buchanan Counties. McCain has a solid lead Springfield.

As usual, the big money race is in St. Louis, with a cool million for McCain and a whopping $2 million for Obama.  The proportion is similar in KC, yet the total is less than a third of what St. Louis has ponied up. St. Louis County accounts for just 17% of the state’s population, but 60% of the presidential fundraising. The three KC metro counties have about the same population, yet only contributed 15% of the total money. It’s obvious why St. Louis gets so much more political clout, they buy it. If only Mission Hills were located a few feet to the east…

County McCain Obama
St. Louis $1,000,000 $2,000,000
Jackson $214,000 $380,000
Greene (Springfield) $100,000 $92,000
Boone (Columbia) $91,000 $51,000
St. Charles (St. Louis exurbs) $51,000 $58,000
Clay $45,000 $53,000
Platte $35,000 $35,000
Buchanan (St. Joseph) $24,000 $25,000
Jasper (Joplin) $23,000 $18,000
Christian (Springfield suburbs) $6,000 $11,000
