Local roads graded, by the road builders
October 16, 2008 |
The Business Journal and the Star have both reported on a recent report from the Heavy Constructors Association that lauds recent improvements in local highways, but is concerned about funding for future improvements. Neither journalism enterprise pointed out that the Heavy Constructors is a very big special interest group - they represent the the construction companies that build roads and highways. It’s no wonder they give MoDOT high marks for its recent road-building program - they made a lot of money off of it.
This is the same group has previously opposed light rail. They are only staying neutral in the current light rail election because the city gave it assurances that the money would keep flowing for road projects in addition to transit. One of the reasons we have so few transportation options is that we spend the vast majority of our money on roads and highways, and the Heavy Constructors works very hard to maintain that status quo.
