Downtown grocery store opens January 7th

For the 17,000 residents and 100,000 workers in the Downtown area, the almost perpetual wait for a grocery store is almost over. January 7th is the opening date for Cosentenio’s Market.  The store will be located at 12th and Main Streets at the northern edge of the Power & Light Distirct, and it will be modeled on Cosentino’s Market in Brookside.

WDAF-TV 4 has a sneak peek inside the store.

    17,000 residents

The grocery store is good news.

But I have no idea why you guys (you know who) keep touting that number despite the fact that there’s NO evidence of it including poll returns in this huge last election.

the salad bar looks like it’s going to be over the top. rich people are really going to enjoy it there. i’m happy for them.

There may not be that many people living downtown, but perhaps this store will get a lot of traffic from people getting groceries before they head home?

Anyway, I’m glad it is finally going to open.
And it’s only opening about a year late.

    Cordish + KC Government = speed & efficiency! :)

The upside – it means not having to drive to the Northland or SunFresh in Westport to get groceries… the downside – will the P&L survive that long?

It will only be a matter of time before even the stupid-head Gen X & Y wannabees discover that the prices at this store are MARKEDLY higher than those of other stores. So high that it will be cost effective to drive somewhere else and buy ones groceries.

When the time comes when this stupid demographic cesspool of a group stops shopping there because it is no longer “ccol” the store will belly up. About 2 years should be the right amount of time.

WTF. The first time I heard about this it was said to open in March ’08. They pushing it back and pushing it back. I’ll believe January 7th when I see it.

  7. That store needs to sell these too:

Those personal grocery carts so I can cart my groceries home and then fold up the cart and store it in my closet.

    TKC -

The 2000 census lists 15,981 residents in the 5 zip codes that most people agree upon as being “downtown”. With the amount of development and conversions since then, it’s not unreasonable at all that another 1,019 residents have been added in the past 8 years.

I am excited for this to open because I am planning on moving to the River Market. I already pay “marked up” prices at Sun Fresh, so it won’t be much different there. Plus I buy my produce at the City Market cheaply anyways, which is the largest chunk of my grocery bill. Hopefully the downtown growth will keep up and this city can make it work.
