Star ignores marriage rights protest
November 17, 2008 | 14 Comments
Interesting that the supposedly “liberal” JO KC Star seems to have completely ignored the local angle of the recent nation-wide protests for equal marriage rights that sprung up in the wake of the California gay marriage ban. The Star only ran an AP piece, and didn’t even bother to insert a sentance mentioning the local event.
However, KMBC-TV 9 did cover the local event at the J.C. Nichols fountian in Mill Creek Park.

The so-called “liberal media” also did it’s best to ignore the protests that went on around the world in 2003 trying to convince George Bush not to invade Iraq. (We wouldn’t want to give a forum to the people who were right about the war from the start, would we?)
Never mind that it was the largest WORLD-WIDE protest ever – it got very little mention or coverage, due to the fact that the news organizations were afraid of looking “weak on terror” and offending their dumb, flag-waving, xenophobic viewers.
Get it straight – there is NO liberal bias in the media. Radio is COMPLETELY run by right-wing nuts (Limbaugh, Hannity, Savage) and television consists of very little news, but lots of pundits who have very loose affiliations with truth (Scarborough, Hannity, O’Reilly, Beck). Also, don’t forget that these news outlets are owned by HUGE corporations that are run by “let-the-free-market-work-things-out” Republicans who have a never-ending quest to make money.
And it’s that desire for money that is the real engine behind the news industry – not political views. They do what is easy, cheap and gets ratings. News has become entertainment and nothing more.
It’s much easier and more sensational to cover house fires and car wrecks than cover complex issues about equal rights, torture, or people protesting the government.
Of course, even KMBC realizes that it’s so much about ratings and money that they felt the need to punish their female reporters for having the impoliteness to actually get older.
Who says the Star is liberal??? The management that is left is out for only one cause… THEMSELVES.
Watch that the Star will soon be offered for sale. With the debt attached to it, even local investors can buy it. Although the attached debt may be more than it’s worth. We will soon see
By my estimation there’s only 5 or 6 reporters left in the joint. It’s not surprising they chose not to cover it.
[...] not alone in our thoughts that les journalistes de KC had dropped the ball – come Monday, Blog KC also noticed the failure of the local media to cover this story, particularly the Star. As [...]
I was part of a group of anti-war activists who met with a reporter from The Star a year ago to find out why our rallies are so rarely covered in the newspaper. He said we needed at least 20 people for any event to be “newsworthy”.
I see there were 500 at this rally on Sat and The Star still ignored it.
This is no longer a local paper. Just a compilation of AP stories. Might as well read USA Today.
There were nowhere near 500 people at that rally. And it wasn’t about anything local, it was about something that happened in California. Did Californians rally when Missouri banned gay marriage?
Were you there, Tim? I am guessing no. So I will believe The Pitch and several other local reporters before I believe an anonymous blogger on the Internet.
Now please explain how allowing gays to marry is harmful. And why you think California has to support Missouri before our KC gay community can come together and support an issue that affects all of us in this country and is currently focused on California.
Believe the Pitch if you like. According to them, everybody’s up to no good, and there’s conspiracy absolutely everywhere. I can see, and I can count. It was just a small group of maybe 50 or so on that little edge of the park. I resent your assumption that I’m against gay marriage, because I am not. In fact, I happen to be gay myself. But I do not see the need to, nor the value of, exaggerating. That little rally just wasn’t very newsworthy. Eventually this issue will be solved in the courts. I see no conspiracy. Others see it everywhere, and those people need to take up knitting or at least something productive.
You’re gay like I have 3 heads. Nice try. You apparently haven’t seen any of the pictures of the rally because it is obvious from those that there were 500 people there. I am a regular at protests at that site and there is no doubt The Pitch and Tony both got the count right.
Now once again, what do you have against allowing gays to marry? And try to tell the truth this time.
Go back and read my original post and quote where I said I was against gay marriage.
You didn’t support this rally and you don’t understand why activists in MO would support a movement that started in CA. You don’t believe The Pitch or Tony. And you claim you are gay.
I have read enough.
One reason this is such an uphill battle is because the most visible people in the gay community (at least in KC) are adult men wearing dresses and makeup who purport to represent us. No thank you.The novelty of that wore off 30+ years ago. When we are represented by credible people, we will make great strides. Kind of like how Barack Obama figured out how to do what Al Sharpton couldn’t.
Jolie Justus isn’t credible enough for you? She was at the rally and spoke as an openly gay elected official.
Jolie Justus dressed in “drag” for Camp magazine last year…was that really necessary? The fight for equality isn’t happening so much in midtown KC; it’s the impression we give to people who live in places with less exposure to gay people. Just look what happened to Kay Barnes whose opponent used footage of drag queens in his ads. Drag, especially, should be seen as the equivalent of blackface and left in the past if we want to be taken seriously and see equality in our lifetimes.
