25 years ago Genghis Khan opened up as the city’s first Mongolia BBQ grill. So far the institution on West 39th Street’s restaurant row has withstood the onslaught of the national chains – BD’s Grll in the eastern suburbs and Stix! on the Kansas side. They even headed off the chains in the northern suburbs by opening a second location at Boardwalk Square.
Now comes word that the Power & Light distict is bringing a national chain called Genghis Grill. Perhaps Genghis Khan ought be looking for a good trademark lawyer? It will be interesting to see how this new chain will do when most Kansas Citians will have to drive past at least one Mongolian BBQ restaurant on their way to the P&L…

Something tells me this place is just another over priced eating establishment that I will actively avoid.
BTW, does the name “Genghis” carry a lot of weight with restaurant-goers? These people must not be very creative – just exactly what Cordish likes!
I just want to state that I find the opening of the Genghis Grill to be a sad commentary on the Power and Light District. For something that is supposed to be a show place for Kansas City, I find it appalling that they are bringing in this group from Dallas rather than looking at Genghis Khan that is local.
Maybe the local outfit is smarter than the dallas outfit and Khan doesn’t want to open up, lose cashK and close up in 9 months
Actually, the owner of the Genghis Grill opening in the P&L is from Wichita. He’s a good guy who believes in his restaurant. Check it out before you pass judgement.
