School board fills vacancies
December 5, 2008 | 1 Comment
The Star reports tha the school board has filled its two vacant seats. Both of the appointees sound decent enough, and voters will have their say at the next election in April 2010.
There was much ado about whether or not the board would select an hispanic since a quarter of the student population is Hispanic. They did not do that. Of course Tony is upset and plays it up the Hispanic victimization angle. However, it should be noted that only one hispanic has run for school board in the last decade, and as a write in candidate. It’s been almost ten years since anyone has bothered to get on the ballot. Can you really ignored when you haven’t even tried to be heard?
Hispanics certainly ought to be represented on the board. They are a large and growing part of the district. But the “leaders” of the hispanic community really need to focus on finding and developing good candidates and working to get hem elected – just like every other constituency in the city.
Once again the focus is more on the drama between adults than the education of the children.

Because you obviously know very little about Kansas City’s Latino Community, judging from your government terminology – You might not know that local Latinos have given up on the School Board long ago and have long championed faith-based or alternative schools.
But if you want celebrate the rearranging of deck chairs on the Titanic, you’re more than welcome. Just please, don’t mischaracterize my statements on the topic.
