475,830 is the new official population count for Kansas City. On Friday the US Census Bureau accepted an appeal from City Hall and bumped the number up from the previous count of 450,375. Last summer we mentioned that a UMKC-led team had estimated that the city’s population was over 530,000, which prompted the city to challenge the Census count.  UMKC also found that the household purchasing power in “poor” neighborhoods was higher than anyone thought.

The 25,000 uncounted Kansas Citians is equal in population to Gladstone or Prairie Village.  Other cities have this type of demographic and economic data to attract business and retailers that have so far skipped over areas like the East Side, Hickman Mills, Old Northeast, etc.

475,830 shows that the growth in the Northland coupled with redevelopment south of the river is boosting the city’s population and pushing us back up towards our 1970 peak of 507,000.  It also moves us up the national rankings from 39th to 35th, between Albuquerque and Fresno.
