River Market Brewery out if its misery, Schlafly to the rescue?

If you haven’t heard yet, River Market Brewing Company closed over the weekend.  Before anyone comments about tax-subsidized competitors to the south (i.e. Gordon Biersch in the Power & Light District), it was clear long before Baltimore guys came to down that one of our very first brew pubs was in the midst of a downhill slide. And the Miller Lite signs in the window were only the most recent sign of their demise.

While it’s sad to lose a Downtown pioneer, there may be a silver lining.  KC Beer Blog reports on the rumors that St. Louis’ Schlafly Brewery has been scouting the city for a possibly outpost here on the state’s west coast, and RMB appears to be on the short list.

Ooooh let’s hope Schlafly opens a restaurant here. Best pretzels ever.

  2. Beer Dog says:

Why don’t you just mosey on over to St. Louis then, Sarah?–and preferably, STAY THERE!!

Some of us here in the REAL Kansas City go to local brew-pubs for the LOCAL BREWS….NOT the imported pretzels!!

Maybe you should get your priorities straight on what you’re really looking for in a ‘local’ ‘brew-pub’…

  3. Sarah says:

Well, every experience I had at the River Market Brewery was ok, not great, so why not encourage another brewery to open up? I drink Boulevard, I drink Schlafly, I drink Upstream, so who are you to judge? I don’t plan on staying in this shit-hole of a city much longer anyways, and idiots like you who have to hide behind an anonymous name on some blog to criticize someone is juvenile and petty. Do you also post the racist comments on the Star’s website also? Eh, you’re not worth my time.

  4. smallest says:

    i agree with ya Sarah.

  5. Jeff says:

@beer dog – if schlafly opened a brew pup and brewed beer here, wouldn’t it be local?

beer dog, have you had the beer at the river market brewery? worst beers that i have ever tasted. they were the laughing stock of the brewing community. everytime i ever went in there people around me would try a beer or two and then ask, “what other beers do you serve?” the bar always closed at random times, the food was mediocre at best (and over-priced), the bartenders were always too busy talking to the other workers to give you much help, and the brewer peed in the keg and called it a wheat beer. to say that you only drink beer based on where it is made and not the quality is almost the same thought process that has lead to your relatives only sleeping with the locals and not venturing out and finding someone without the same last name.

Be nice. Don’t get upset over pretzels. Schlafly is an excellent beer, as is Boulevard. It would be nice to have someplace closer to us to go for the brewpub experience, which Boulevard doesn’t offer anyway.
