KC scores electric vehicle assembly plant

KCMO has landed one of the first US plants for assembly of all-electric vehiclesSmith Electric Vehicles US will retrofit part of the  American Airlines Overhaul base at KCI to manufacture plug-in electric delivery trucks.  In addition to the company’s own Smith Newton delivery van, they will also build the Transit Connect truck for Ford.

This is a pretty big deal for the city’s efforts to attract “green collar” jobs.  It is also a big step towards the future for Missouri’s automobile manufacturing sector, which has historically been one of the biggest outside of Michigan.  Employment at the new plant will start out at 100 and is expected to quickly double.
