Today the new Kansas City Film Festival gets underway. It’s a new combination of two long-standing festivals that had focused on feature length and short films separately. Now both will be presented together. The festival has booked a great program from around the world yet including some key works from KC natives and/or filmed locally.
The setting for the new combined festival is the brand new AMC Mainstreet Theatre at 14th and Main. It’s the old Empire Theatre, an historic movie palace that had been abandoned since the 1980s. The Mainstreet was renovated as part of the adjacent Power & Light District and will be managed by AMC, whose corporate headquarters are just four blocks north at 10th and Main. Hopefully this will be one part of the P&L District without controversy and well worth the cost.
