Mission Hills hit-and-run convict goes free
June 19, 2009 | 7 Comments
Today convicted killer Curtis Mertensmeyer was released from jail after serving just 120 days for the hit and run death of Daniel Riemann. A drunk Mertensmeyer ran over Riemann while he was trying to cross Ward Parkway, and was going fast enough to sever one of his victim’s legs and throw it from the scene. The moral of the story is that if you want to get way with driving drunk, make sure to hit a pedestrian and not another automobile. And for extra protection, it make sure your mailing address includes the words Mission Hills.

I knew Daniel. I volunteered with him a few times. He was warm, kind and very funny. His death is an absolute tragedy. It really doesn’t matter what his condition was when he was hit. Every day it is my responsibility not to hit things with my car. It goes the same for Daniel’s murderer.
The Judge in this case has demonstrated once again that justice in the USA has long ago been bought and sold. We all know that countless others of less means would be in jail for a long, long time after committing such an awful crime.
I bet the murderer in question has his license back in less than a year, and a brand new car from Daddy.
And Justice for all….. but just a little bit different if you have money.
Interesting how the Star is not allowing comments on either of their stories about his release. Did the Mertensmeyers pay them off as well as the judge?
His mother is making excuses for him, the judge is making excuses for him… I would say the future of this kid is in extreme doubt.
No, No, William Rockhill Nelson, the moral of the story is, if you want to get away with hit-and-run drunk driving, where you’ve not just hit a person but hit them, severed a leg and an aorta, etc., etc., and killed them, for pity’s sake, make sure you have loads and loads of money and are from one of the best and most expensive, “tony” neighborhoods in town, that’s all.
ScooterJ–the Star knew this action by the Judge was so clearly aggregious that their site would have gone wild with indignation and outrage, I’m sure, that they just didn’t want to have to deal with all the class-based fights that surely, rightly, would have ensued. More unfairness but we’re used to it, right?
I suspect that there are conditions for his release. Hopefully someone can publish those conditions and our entire community can help hold this brat accountable by turning him in immediately if he violates the conditions. If nothing else they’ll have to convince another judge to give him yet another slap on the wrist and that might cost even more.
