Channel JoCo deer outrage towards something worthwhile

The “controversy” over Johnson County’s plan to cull the deer overpopulation in Shawnee Mission Park is starting to get ridiculous considering the people protesting are participants in the suburban sprawl that encircled the deer on all sides and created the problem.

It’s great to see the beige people finally excited about a civic issue, but it’s too bad the rage isn’t directed at something really important.  For example, why aren’t they closing down I-35 until everyone has viable transit options?  Or blockading Blue Valley High School until all kids have a decent education.  Or picketing Menorah Medical Center until all Kansas Citians have health care. Or burning down Hen Houses until every neighborhood has access to fresh, affordable food.

More people will be shot on Kansas City’s East Side this year than deer will be shot in Shawnee Mission Park. But the suburbanite “animal rights” folks consider deer a higher priority than poor people.

“let them eat war – that is how we ration the poor”

That cracks me up, I’ve been calling JoCo the Land of Beige for years.
What these arm-chair animal rights activists don’t get is that if deer are over populated, there will not be enough food, if there is not enough food, the deer will starve and get sickly, sickly deer = disease. It is more humanitarian to cull the population than to allow over population

dave-o: your argument is lame. Using your logic, people fighting for any cause should be looked down upon because they consider their issue a higher priority than poor people.

Lets substitute a couple words in your last sentence to see who else is indifferent to the poor.

“gay rights” folks consider equality a higher priority than poor people.

“women’s rights” folks consider sexism a higher priority than poor people.

“civil rights” folks consider discrimination a higher priority than poor people.

Trying to rank issues by importance is pointless. Individually and collectively, we can multitask.

If helping poor people on the east side is your thing, then work on that. I can work on trying to get better heath care for us. My sister can work on gay rights and my neighbor can help expand our circle of compassion by looking out for animal rights. Maybe I’ll also help out my sister or neighbor – after all, their issues are legitimate too.
